Core Performance has a great article on the importance of foam rolling. This is an essential training and recovery tool. Although stretching is important, it doesn't necessarily help muscles that are knotted up. The use of a foam roller helps to work out the knots that occur in muscles such as hip flexors, glutes, and quads, so that they are more "pliable and functional".
They function similar to a massage, and are a great tool for recovery, and also a great warmup tool to start training. More about foam rolling can be read at Core Performance -
How to Use a Foam Roller.
