18s Adv National Finalists

Congratulations to the 18s Adv RCC team, who reached the Finals of the National Junior Team Tennis Championships last weekend at the USTA National Campus in Florida.  They were defeated in the Finals by Austin Tennis Academy.  This is the 3rd RCC team who has finished 2nd at Nationals, and is the best result by an 18s Advanced team.  The team coached by Zack Schwenning was made up of Sam Routzahn, Paige Kompa, Alex Heiden, Griffin Biernat, Zoey Weil and Maddie Atway.


The girls were undefeated in play going into the finals.  Paige was playing at JTT Nationals for the 6th time, and also has made 3 trips to WTT Junior Nationals.  In the 1st match, Alex Heiden came back from 2-7 in the 3rd set breaker to win 11-9.  Griffin came back from down a set in a heated singles match to win 10-2 in the breaker. 



 Girls doubles dominated in the finals, but the team was outplayed by perennial power ATA.

18s Int JTT Nationals

Congratulations to the 18s Int RCC Midwest Championship team who competed last weekend at the Junior Team Tennis Nationals in Orlando at the USTA National Campus.  The team was made up of Ella Hazelbaker, Nick Geelan, Wendy Shi, Noah Mizer, Will Newberry, Evelyn Holman, Jack Rardon and Stanley Cao.


The team was in a really close flight, finishing one game out of 2nd place.  They defeated Southwest, and lost to Missouri Valley and Middle States. 
They finished the tournament with 2 wins over Southern and Carribean to finish 13th.  Ella Hazelbaker finished undefeated for the weekend.

RCC Green Ball Single Day Showdown

Last weekend, there was a 10s Single Day Showdown at the Racquet Club.  Congratulations to Karan Shankar for winning the Boys 10s.  There were lots of close matches in the tournament.

JTT Nationals

RCC sent 2 teams to compete at the Junior Team Tennis Nationals in Florida at the USTA National Campus this weekend.  The 18s Adv and the 18s Int teams were Midwest Champions and will play tomorrow at the National Championships. 

The 18s Adv team, which finished 5th at Nationals last year, is made up of Alex Heiden, Sam Routzahn, Griffin Biernat, Paige Kompa, Maddie Atway, and Zoey Weil, and was coached by Zack Schwenning.  Also on the team during the season were Arya Dudipala, Lalasa Nagireddy, Colten Clark, Josh Cole, Robert Cash and Elliot Jones.





The 18s Int Team, which won the Midwest Championships back to back years, is made up of Jack Rardon, Nick Geelan, Will Newberry, Stanley Cao, Wendy Shi, Evelyn Holman, Noah Mizer and Ella Hazelbaker.  Neha Dudipala and Adam Sorrels were also on the team during the season.

Saturday 10 and Under Youth Progression Tournament

This Saturday the Racquet Club will run a Youth Progression tournament for Boys and Girls 10 and Under divisions.  There is an Orange Ball division and a Green Ball Division.  Matches will start at 4:00 and 6:00.  The deadline to sign up is Wednesday night.

RCC 18s Int Midwest Champions

RCC swept the 18s divisions at the JTT Midwest Championships.  RCC1 won the 18s Int, qualifying for the National Championships in November at the USTA National Campus in Florida. 



The team consisted of Nick Geelan, Jack Rardon, Will Newberry, Neha Dudipala, Ella Hazelbaker, Noah Mizer, Evelyn Holman, Wendy Shi, Stanley Cao and Adam Sorrels. 
They defeated Fast and Furious Forehands from Indiana in the final 35-26.  They had a close match with Team Columbus in their flight, with a clutch win from Jack and Noah in mixed, and went on to beat Paramount to advance to the finals, with big singles wins from Evelyn and Will.




USTA National Clay Court Champion

Congratulations to Robert Cash, for winning the Boys 18s Doubles this summer with J.J. Mercer at the USTA National Clay Court Championships in Delray Beach.



They had a tough match in the quarterfinals, winning 7-6 6-4 over Hotard / John, and went on to win the tournament without dropping a set.  They defeated Crowder and Frye in the finals 6-3 6-3. 




WTT Junior Nationals

RCC qualified for World Team Tennis Junior Nationals in San Diego for the 3rd year in a row.  The team got 5th place.  The team was made up of Paige Kompa, Josh Cole, Lalassa Nagireddy, Jordan Phelps, Kathleen Jones and Connor Biernat. 



The team lost a tough match to Barnes (who finished 2nd) in their flight.  They bounced back to beat Eastern, and then the Claim Jumpers in their last 2 matches to get 5th place.

RCC Slammin Summer Series Boys

There was a Boys Compass Draw at the club last weekend.  Congratulations to Reece Page and Nathan Yu for winning the Boys 16s (Croatia Division) and the Boys 18s.
Congrats to Tanish Pairu for reaching the finals of the Boys 16s Brazil Division.

Also, congrats to Jacob Khvalsky for winning the Boys 12s in Tipp City.

Midwest Open Deadline

The Midwest Open takes place July 21st - 23rd.  The deadline to sign up is today July 12th.  This is a Midwest Level 2 tournament, and has National Level 4 Singles Points, and Level 3 Doubles Points.  A lot of draws won't fill, so everyone who applies will get in.

OVTA 10s Districts

The Racquet Club hosted the 10 and Under OVTA District Championships last weekend.  Sophia Wu won the Singles and Doubles with Ella Tsao in the Girls 10s.  Amy Liu reached the Finals.

 


Congrats to Henry Lessard and Nikhil Bhimireddy for winning the Boys 10s Doubles.  Henry also won the Singles and Nikhil reached the finals of the Singles.  Shailen and Devan Patel reached the semifinals, and Harrison Lessard won the Consolation in a 17-15 in the 3rd tiebreaker.

OHSAA Boys States Qualifiers

Congrats to all of the players who competed at the OHSAA State Championships this year.

Colten Clark (Lancaster) made his 1st trip to states in D1 Singles.  He faced Grant Wendell from Cincinnati.  Colten, a senior, is playing at Ashland University next year.



All state competitors included Jordan Phelps and Alex Heiden (Olentangy Orange) reached the quarterfinals before falling in 3 sets to a tough team from Sycamore.  Heiden was a 1st time state qualifier.  Jordan, a senior is also going to play at Ashland University.



From Upper Arlington, Josh Cole also was all state, advancing to the quarterfinals with Will Reynolds before falling in a close match to Mason.

OVTA District Tournament

The Ohio Valley District Championships are coming June 9th - 12th.  This is the Qualifier for the Midwest Closed, which starts June 23rd.  Last year, none of the draws were full, meaning that everyone who applied got in.  The tournament has singles and doubles.  The deadline to sign up is Sunday June 3rd. Don't wait until the last minute to sign up.

OHSAA Boys State Tournament

Congratulations to the Central Ohio Boys State Qualifiers.  The OHSAA State Tournament will take place today and tomorrow at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

Twos National Level 3 Finalist

Congratulations to Arya Dudipala who reached the finals of the Twos USTA National Level 3 Tournament in Toledo with Nishi Gandra from Cincinnati.  This is a team tournament with each player playing singles and doubles each round.  They went undefeated in doubles.

Junior Team Tennis 2018

The USTA Junior Team Tennis season starts soon.  Teams are being formed now.
The 1st matches are on Friday June 1st.
Matches are on Fridays and generally start between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
Matches include boys and girls singles, boys and girls doubles, and mixed doubles.  Players must play in at least 2 local matches to be eligible for the District and Midwest tournament.

Local Matches:  June 1st - July 6th
District Tournament:  July 14th - 15th Park of Roses
Midwest Tournament:  July 28th - 29th Indianapolis

Last summer RCC sent 7 teams to the Midwest Championships and had 3 teams qualify for Nationals.

Ashland University Commitments

Congratulations to Stu Brdicka, Jordan Phelps and Colten Clark for signing to play at Ashland University.  Ashland article



Stu is a senior at Olentangy High School.  He has a sister Brianna who plays at Ashland also, and a sister Megan who played at Wright State.  Stu qualified for the State Tournament in doubles as a sophomore and in singles as a junior.  Stu played on the RCC JTT team that got 5th at Nationals last year, and on the WTT team that got 3rd at Nationals last year.  He is also on the WTT team that is going to Nationals this year.



Jordan is a senior at Olentangy Orange High School.  He was a Doubles State Qualifier in 2016 (All State).  He is on the RCC WTT team that is going to Nationals this year.  He was also on multiple RCC JTT teams that went to Nationals including 2017, 2016, 2015, and 2014 (final 4).




Colten is a senior at Fairfield Christian Academy in Lancaster.  He was on the WTT that finished 3rd at Nationals last year.  He also was on multiple JTT teams that went to Nationals including 2012, 2013, 2014 (final 4), 2015, 2016 and 2017 (3rd place).

Midwest Level 3 10s

Congratulations to Henry Lessard and Nikhil Bhimireddy for getting hardware at the Midwest Level 3 East Championships (Boys 10s) in Toledo last weekend. 
Henry went 3 sets with the 1 seed and champion, then went on to win the North Consolation Draw.
Nikhil also went 3 and 1 and won the West Consolation Draw.
